What if the converted FITS file is not displaying correctly?
Ensure you are using a FITS viewer that supports the specific data type and encoding of the converted file. Common FITS viewers include SAOImage DS9 and Fv.
Understanding FITS Format
The Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) is a standard digital format used to store scientific and astronomical data. It's widely adopted due to its ability to handle large datasets, metadata, and various data types. Converting fax data to FITS might be necessary for integrating faxed observations or documents into astronomical workflows or for archiving purposes. While seemingly unusual, this conversion can be valuable in specific research contexts where faxed information needs to be incorporated into a standardized scientific format. The FITS format allows for robust data management and analysis, ensuring long-term preservation and accessibility.
